Most of us are in touch one way or another with parents of autistic children and realize just how much of a gift and a challenge these children can be. Unfortunately there is no "one fits all" treatment for autism and parents and caregivers continue to seek solutions.
I have worked with autistic children in the past and have had some exceptional success with some but not all. This stimulated me to research efforts of other homeopathic practitioners who have also worked with autism. I found Dr. Tinus Smits, a prominent Dutch Physician and Homeopath, who has achieved some major breakthroughs in the treatment of autism. The late Dr. Smits developed a step by step protocol to treat autistic children which he has labeled "CEASE Therapy". This stands for "Complete Elimination of Autistic Spectrum Expression". In this groundbreaking work Dr. Smits used his CEASE method in the treatment of over 300 autistic children. In many cases the parents have declared their children 100% cured. In others the process is still underway with significant improvement.
He believes the cause of autism is multi-faceted and is caused by an accumulation of stress factors in the cerebral cortex . These stress factors can start before or during pregnancy or during a premature birth or a difficult delivery and in the first two years of a child's life. Some examples are: Administration of multiple vaccines, anesthesia (e.g. positioning of eardrum tubes), various environmental factors (e.g. plastics and heavy metals) etc.
Dr Smits' protocol tends to focus on uncovering these insults made on the developing immune system of the child. Using Isotherapy, a form of homeopathy , the causative toxic substance is administered in homeopathic preparation ensuring that the toxic imprints made on the child's energetic fields are erased. Orthomolecular support is used as an adjunct to the isopathic treatment to properly nourish the brain and to restore proper bowel function. These supplements make the whole healing and detoxification process smoother.
Last week I attended Dr. Smit's first English speaking certification course in Eindhoven, Netherlands, along with 45 other homeopathic practitioners from all over the world including a significant number from North America. I am now certified to use his CEASE protocol to work with children on the autistic spectrum as well as behaviorally challenged children including ADD, ADHD and defiant oppositional disorder.

CEASE Autism ~ a very effective way to treat autism with amazing results!
It is Dr. Tinus Smit's conclusion after having seen over 300 cases whatever severity. In his experience autism is an accumulation of different causes and about 70% is due to vaccines, 25% to toxic medication and other toxic substances, 5% to some diseases. With isotherapy (see below), a form of homeopathy using the toxic substances itself in homeopathic preparation, the toxic imprints can be erased.

CEASE Therapy
The treatment of autistic children and even adults has matured through 300 cases last three years and is called CEASE Therapy, which stands for Complete Elimination of Autistic Spectrum Expression. Step by step all causative factors (vaccines, regular medication, intoxications, etc.) are detoxified with the homeopathic diluted and potentized substances that caused the autism. Currently we use the 30, 200, 1M and 10M potencies to clean out the energetic field of the patient from the imprint of toxic substances or diseases.
CEASE Therapists
CEASE therapists follow a 5 days course given by Dr. Tinus Smits himself to guarantee the high quality of treatment and to ensure the correct application of this method. The homeopathic practitioners will be certificated as CEASE therapists after having successfully passed the final tests. They will stay in contact with all other CEASE therapists all over the world by an interactive forum and will receive supervision.
Obstacles to cure
So far the main obstacle to cure seems to be the lack of information about the causes of this disease. When important events in the life story of these children and their parents are overlooked or unknown an essential key to the healing can be missed.
Isotherapy treatment
Using the causative substances as a homeopathic remedy, their profound toxic effects can be traced. The reactions on such an isopathic remedy are so characteristic that there can be no doubt about the existence of a link between the toxins as the cause and the development of Autism as its effects. In this way step by step I discovered why autism and other behavior problems with their specific development problems have so dramatically increased the last ten to twenty years. It became also clear to me that autistic children do not suffer from one single cause but from an accumulation of different causes.
Vulnerable brain of unborn and small children
During pregnancy and the first two years of life the brain is extremely vulnerable and should be protected as much as possible. That is why medication during and after pregnancy, especially vaccination are so toxic. Even energetic imprints in the energetic field of the father and the mother before pregnancy can be transmitted to the child by energetic transfer. In my book, which will be presented in the summer of 2009, you will find several examples of this.
Toxic substances
During my research for complete healing I was gradually more and more amazed how certain substances, even not labeled as toxic, can be a causative factor for autism or other developmental disorders. E.g. I saw a dramatic improvement in an autistic girl by the detoxification of a nose spray, xylometazolin, which the mother had used regularly during her pregnancy. Regular medicine, using chemical substances that are foreign to the human body and fundamentally toxic, has become more and more a pathogenic medicine. This is not only true for vaccines, but also for all kind of treatments prescribed by our modern doctors.
Orthomolecular support
With the isopathic treatment I use also orthomolecular medicine to properly nourish the brain of these children and to restore proper bowel function. Many supplements are in use for the treatment of autism and have their value, but I use just a few: Vitamin C, Magnesium, Zinc and fish oil. In my treatment these supplements serve as a support for the healing process, while the healing process itself is monitored by the isopathic treatment. Classical and Inspiring Homeopathy
As a third tool I also use classical homeopathy and Inspiring Homeopathy, which are discussed extensively in my book on autism, which will be published this summer. They both play an important role in the complete healing of autistic children, but without the resolution of specific causes which are responsible for the development of autism, even classical homeopathy mostly cannot bring complete healing. Nevertheless this way of healing can give very encouraging results and can give the final touch to complete healing.
Treatment consists of a number of steps and therapies.
- Detoxification (homeopathically) of the most relevant stress factors in the patient's history: vaccines, anaesthesia, antibiotics, childhood diseases, etc. In case of a history of difficult deliveries and caesarian sections, osteopathic help will be called in. Osteopaths are of the opinion that the meningae are often too tense leaving the brain insufficient room to grow (causing stress!).
- Secondly the oxidative stress of the celebral cortex is treated with fat soluble vitamin C and the brain is nourished with omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) which are important building blocks for the brain.
- Thirdly the metallothionein function in the bowels and the brain can be restored with the use of zinc. For this we use an ascorbate complex (water soluble vitamin C combined with potassium, magnesium (tranquillizer) and zinc). This also restores the integrity of the bowels. In addition Saccharum Officinale D6 likewise yields good results in restoring intestinal flora and function.
- Next specific aspects of the austistic behaviour can be addressed by a constitutional homeopathic treatment of the child, whereby a remedy is selected that is largely based on the behaviour of the child. The remedy Saccharum Officinale and other constitutional remedies are important elements in restoring eyecontact, contact with the outside world and the emotions etc. Cuprum Metallicum can offer the solution to the typical rigidity and obsessiveness. Both remedies are part of Inspiring Homeopathy and not yet very well known in the homeopathic world.

Dr. Tinus Smits has studied homeopathy over 30 years, practicing as a lay homeopath before doing his medical training (at 31 years). He has studied with Jacques Imberechts, Alex Jacques, George Vithoulkas and Alphons Geukens. He finished his medical studies in 1986 and has been teaching for more than 20 years in different countries all over the world. Sadly, Dr. Smits passed on this April but his legacy of helping children will certainly live on.

What can parents themselves do to help their child?
Avoid environmental factors to the extent possible in order to bypass genetic susceptibility.
- Give your child the best nutrition available, i.e., organic nutrition, while avoiding packaged foods. By doing this you will prevent further intoxication with heavy metals, pesticides, flavor enhancers like MSG, color additives, GMOs, preservatives and other waste products. Many studies mentioned in John Erb's book, The Slow Poisoning of America, link MSG to obesity, diabetes, migraines and headaches, autism, ADHD, and even Alzheimer's.
- Give your child leavened bread instead of yeast bread to prevent the binding of zinc and magnesium to an insoluble complex with phytine acid and to enable the assimilation of nutritional zinc and magnesium. Since whole wheat leavened bread is often very heavy, it would be better to start with lighter leavened bread.
- Give your child enough pure water without copper or other toxins.
- Avoid the use of microwaves for all food and drinks; avoid also as much as possible plastic containers and packages.
- Avoid as much as possible sugar, sweets in general and artificial sweeteners. It is poisonous to the intestines and pancreas and several other tissues. Sugar also inhibits the production of EPA and DHA , both omega-3 fatty acids that are of crucial importance to the brain tissue.
- Provide a quiet and peaceful environment for your child, eliminating excess stimuli such as TV, Game Boys or computers.
- Make sure your child is well grounded to the earth. Static electricity may give rise to both emotional/mental disorders and physical complaints. Synthetic clothing, isolating shoes (rubber or plastic soles) and synthetic floor coverings should therefore be avoided. If possible, have your child walk around barefoot. Eliminate all electric appliances in the bedroom such as electric alarm clocks, TV, computers or audio equipment.
- Provide a healthy sleeping facility for your child. A healthy bed should not contain any metal. If possible, have your child sleep facing north or east. A dark room is important for the production of melatonin (sleep hormone).
- Avoid antibiotics since they impair intestinal flora and consequently increase underlying problems. In case of infection, opt for naturopathic solutions.
- Put your child on omega-3 fatty acids, the highest and purest quality you can find. Normally I prescribe not more than 500 mg a day. Avoid the overconsumption of omega-6 fatty acids from soy and corn, which are mainly in packed foot. Omega-3 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory, omega-6 are pro-inflammatory. The ideal ratio would be 1:1, but modern food contains 1:25!
- Administer the two different vitamins Cs yourself. Both are available in tablets or capsules and as powder. The rule is that in case of diarrhea the dose should be lowered a little bit until the diarrhea disappears (bowel tolerance dose). This is without danger; only patients with haemochromatosis should avoid extra vitamin C, because vitamin C stimulates iron absorption. The general rule is not more than 1000 mg per year of age. So a child of four year can be given 4000 mg a day divided over three doses a day. That means three times an ascorbate of 1000mg and 3 times ascorbylpalmitate of 500mg (which is 3x 200mg of vitamin C). That makes 3600 mg per day. At 6 years and older the maximum dose I advise it still 6 grams a day, which is generally enough to attain our goal.
- Give also extra zinc, up to 4 year 10 mg, from 4 to 8 year 20 mg, then after 30 mg.
- Then make an appointment with a CEASE therapist. Autism is a serious disease that can be treated successfully, but even if I have given give you a lot of information about its treatment in this book, it needs professional help. Otherwise you will ultimately be disappointed and not get the results you hoped to achieve. You child is too precious to treat yourself.
